The Story of the Chemainus Murals

This is a story of spirit and will - of a community, dependant on the forest industry since 1858, then expanding into a vibrant tourist attraction and a thriving business community.

In 1980 a downtown revitalization program started, envisioned by Karl Schutz - the pride of the local people took hold. From the belief that our history was to important to be forgotten came the idea of bringing the forest heritage alive on the walls of the local buildings. In 1982 the process began with five murals and "The Festival of Murals" was born.

Today Chemainus teems with life. The town is a celebration of nature, art and colour, a place of heritage and progress. The giant, world-famous murals are drawn from actual historical photographs and events. There are now 33 murals.

Dinner, theatre, museum, art galleries, modern shopping facilities and conveniences, there's always something going on.

Chemainus is home to the best kinds of outdoor entertainment. Enjoy golf, tennis, cycling, hiking, camping and swimming or simply strolling through the streets of "The little Town that Did!" When you combine one of the mildest climates in Canada with Vancouver Island's magnificent coastal location, you're sure to find an abundance of water sports. You can enjoy a day of fishing in the local ocean waters, or you may wish to sail or cruise the alluring Gulf Islands.

While you are in the area, visit Ladysmith, Vancouver Island's award winning heritage city. Just to the south of Chemainaus is Duncan, City of Totems. And my town, Cowichan Bay.
