Located on the Malahat Highway, just north of Victoria. One of the most
picturesque and popular campgrounds on Vancouver Island, British Columbia.
This is a big park, not just a simple campground. There are miles of trails, creeks, and pathways. One right to the top of Mount Finlayson, a height of almost 1400 feet in less than a mile. Many falls and streams. In October one of the best places to see salmon spawning. Year round eagles to watch, plenty of Mountain Bike trails. In short, an adventure, not just a campground.
It is mis-named though... should have been called Coldstream, it is bloody cold in winter.
There are 150 campsites. All near flush toilets, water and showers. Wood is provided for campfires, but my experience has been to bring kindling or fire starters. The stuff is usually a lot on the green side and often needs coaxing into action. No hookups are provided, but a sani station is located on the campsite. There are picnic tables and a common cooking shelter at the day use picnic area.
Be prepared for campfire regulations at this park, and most others on South Vancouver Island. I can't print my thoughts on that one without using sailor type words.
Be prepared to hike long distances. It is possible to drive
and park at each of the areas. But, be warned, it is a hike of about a mile
and a half from the campgrounds to the picnic area where the salmon spawn.
A nice short walk to the Goldstream Falls is right at the top of the campground.
There are stairs, but be prepared to climb back up. There is also a nice
easy hike along the Goldstream River for the less vigorous. Start at the
top of the campgrounds and walk down, or start at the big dip near the entrance
and hike up. Personally, I prefer to hike up. It is easier to walk back
to camp from the top than the bottom of the place.
This area is open year round, but due to the fact that it is in wooded mountainous area warm clothing and shelter is needed in winter months. The showers and water are turned off in November for winter, but the rate drops considerably.
