Random thoughts from

Captain Tom's

Vancouver Island Website

When the internet was started it was intended for "scholarly pursuit". The universities were given the whole thing to use as they saw fit. I was working at Malaspina College (as it was then called) and sort of got in on the ground floor. It was polulated immediately by all sorts of research papers and the sort. All in text only, we had no pictures till "mozzilla" hit the scene. Then it opened up wide. Libraries, The Louvre, The Smithsonian, to name just a few.

Well, like anything good, it eventually gets wrecked by the commercial folks wanting to make a buck. Just look at TV! In Europe where things were not as well organized it still is relatively commercial free. But in our country...

Well, the good old days are returning for some of us in the form of "blogs" (short for Web Logs). A place where us little voices can be heard. Needless to say, I am converting all my personal stuff to that format. Here are a couple of links I have set up for my stuff:

Over the years I have been writing web pages (I was there before there were pictures) I have noted a whole lot of things. Some I like, some I don't. So, you will find some very opinionated stuff here. But, as always, they are my opinion and everyone knows I don't know what I am talking about! Click here for my mindless meanderings.

Personally I have evolved a lot since I got involved in computers in the early 60's. That in itself pretty well dates me! Now that I am semi-retired I can look back at it all and truly say "Been there, done that, bought the tee shirt...". I feel I have paid my dues in full. I am particularly proud of my small contribution to the world of Forensics. Click here for my "brag file" on that one.

When I started this site in the early 90's there were very few websites. Now there are probably more websites in my area than there were then in the entire world. Everyone has a web page now. But, I staunchly refuse to modernize. I feel that the focus of the Internet should be to inform. If it entertains as well, so much the better. To do that I personally refuse to use Java or any of the fancy things we find on the websites of today. If you want music or special "mouse effects" this is not the place.

OK, that part is over. On to facts about this website. I am still a Western Separatist. But not so mundane as to suggest the Province leave Canada. I still think we should convert Vancouver Island into a Republic. Click here for my thoughts on that one.

I am still politically incorrect and prone to use bad language when it is appropriate.

The interest I had in cars has faded but, it is not dead. Thanks to the geocities website I have managed to keep my cars and ham radio stuff. Just click the appropriate one to go and visit.

Click here for some information on Winchester rifles. I still have an interest in collecting old firearms. But, the Canadian Firearms Regulations are kind of putting a cramp in that one!

I do have an interest in travel, but now is by sailboat. So, except for a few specific interesting places all my travel writing will be boat oriented. Until the government finds a way to tax the wind the Captain Tom will be sailing.

How about some stuff that real legends are made of? Read here all about Brother 12 and his religious followers on Decourcy Island.
